Protect innovation. Save our internet.
Update: This site went dark on January 18, 2012, in support of the worldwide Internet Blackout, protesting SOPA and PIPA in the United States. On February 11, 2012 this site will go dark again, this time in protest of the Canadian C-11 bill threatening the foundation of the Internet in our True North, Strong and Free and in support of the worldwide protests against ACTA. You can join the protest in Canada by signing the OpenMedia petition, writing your Local MP and by reading up on what C-11 plans to do to your internet.
Right now, there are three bills that threaten the foundation of how our Internet operates, two in the United States, one in Canada. The two bills in the US – SOPA and PIPA – have been uniformly dissented against by the tech industry and large internet companies.
As a form of protest, a number of large traffic sites such as Google, Wikipedia, reddit and the entire iCanHasCheezeburger family will go dark on January 18, 2012 to protest these oppressive bills.
In Canada, an equally oppressive bill, labeled “C-11” threatens to stifle innovation north of the border. By implementing “digital locks”, the bill would make it illegal for you to watch your legally-owned movie on more than one household system (i.e. your PS3 and your computer).
Here is how you can help save the internet from innovation stifling:
